The Great Barrier Reef is one of the healthiest and most extensive coral reef systems in the world.
Passions of Paradise is involved in a number of environmental initiatives and research projects.
Some of our areas of activity include:
- Advanced Eco Certification (Ecotourism Australia): We hold the highest level of eco accreditation available in Australia
- Highest Standard Operator: We are recognised by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority as a "High Standard Operator" on the Great Barrier Reef.
- Planet Safe Partnership (Tourism Tropical North Queensland) We are recognised for implementing wonderful environmental initiatives and achieving excellent environmental sustainability standards while minimising our carbon footprint.
- BleachWatch Program: Our staff participate in this government monitoring program by conducting daily observations of the coral and reporting any coral bleaching.
- Eye on the Reef Monitoring Program: Our dive staff also participate in this large-scale industry monitoring program. They complete daily observation reports on the general marine life at each of our reef sites. This data is used by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to build up a database on the seasonality of fish and other marine life.
- Guest Researchers: We encourage researchers to come with us to the reef. Over the past year we have had researchers conduct studies into coral disease, algae distribution, giant clam development and sea bird habitats.
- Passenger Survey Research: We host researchers from James Cook University who are surveying passenger to determine customer satisfaction. .
- Save a Shark Program: In 2007 We launched this special conservation program that is aimed to raise money for shark research. This initiative is the first of its kind in Australia – directly linking a commercial reef operator (us) with a marine research and conservation organization (Oceania Chondricththyan Society) to provide funds for student research.. In 2007 Passions donated $3,800 to student grant money and is on target to donate over $5,000 in 2008.
- Active Eco-Participation: We are also members of an extensive list of tourism and eco-based associations and we enjoy promoting and supporting ecological sustainability
- In-House Reef Protection Program – We have adopted an Environmental Policy and program that incorporates numerous elements:
- Daily litter clean-up of the reef and island
- No plastic bags
- Removal of pest animals
- Floatation devices for snorkellers to help maintain buoyancy
- Floating rest stations for tired swimmers & snorkellers to hang off
- Hand dryers in toilets to reduce paper use
- Non toxic anti-foul used on the hull
- Educational Presentations & Programs: Our staff and management are actively involved in 'giving something back' by giving talks and presentations at conferences, local schools and special interest groups.

2008 is...International Year of the Reef (IYOR2008)
Passions of Paradise is joining this worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and the range of impacts threatening them.
We are planning a series of activities to help achieve the goals of this initiative. The activities are designed to
motivate people to take an interest in the reef environment and the associated marine life
Our Goals:
- To increase awareness about the ecological, economic, social and cultural values of coral reefs
- To improve marine best practices to minimise threats to our coral reefs
- To develop innovative onboard activities and practices that can be used as models by other reef tourism operators.
